Ray Light Sculpture
Designed by AHM x LUND
Ray is a sculptural lighting object in solid Oregon pine, created by Copenhagen-based design and craft practice AHM x LUND.
Inspired by the inner life of a tree, Ray reveals the growth rings of the wood through light. A concealed LED source presses warm light outward from within the circular form, transforming the material into both structure and illumination.
The first piece has entered the permanent collection of Designmuseum Danmark.
Ray takes inspiration from the inner life of a tree - the growth rings that record each year of its existence, and the channels through which light and water once moved.
A tree reaching the same diameter as Ray would be around a century old. This sense of time is central to the piece. Rather than using wood only as a surface or structure, Ray reveals the anatomy of the material from within.
The circular frame is made from carefully selected Oregon pine and treated with Uzukuri, a Japanese brushing technique that enhances the contrast between the harder and softer growth layers of the wood. As light moves across the surface, the grain shifts between darker autumn growth and lighter spring grain.
An integrated LED source is concealed within a narrow slit at the edge of the circular form. Instead of casting light downward, Ray pushes light outward through the wood, making the rings visible and giving the object a quiet architectural presence.
Suspended on two slender steel wires, which also conduct the electrical current, Ray appears almost weightless. It occupies a room with restraint, yet with complete presence - equal parts sculpture and illuminant.
- Circular frame in solid Oregon pine
- Hand-brushed low-relief grain. The surface is finished using Uzukuri, a Japanese brushing technique that enhances the contrast between the harder and softer growth layers of the wood. This gives the surface a tactile structure and reveals the natural rhythm of the pine grain.
- Integrated LED strip, 3000K warm white
- Two adjustable steel suspension wires (5 metres, length adjustable upon request)
- Canopy in Oregon pine, finished with clear natural wax, silicone-free (L: 70 cm, W: 8 cm, H: 6 cm)
As Oregon pine is a natural material, each piece has its own grain, color tone and ring pattern. These natural variations are part of the character of Ray and make every piece unique.
Each Ray is handcrafted in Denmark by Snedkersind and signed.
- Diameter: 120 cm
- Depth: 8 cm
- Weight: 25 kg
- Integrated LED strip, 3000K warm white, CRI Ra95
- Approximately 18W total, 3,060 lm
- Input voltage: 220–240V
- IP20, Class II
- Dimmable via 2.4 GHz RF wireless control and PUSH dimming
The light sculpture will be delivered in a wooden crate.

Collected by Designmuseum Danmark
Ray was created for The Mindcraft Project 2025, a platform that has introduced Danish designers and makers to international audiences since 2008. The first piece has been acquired by Designmuseum Danmark, one of Denmark’s leading institutions for design.
This acquisition places Ray within a wider context of Danish craft, material experimentation and contemporary design. As part of the museum’s collection, the piece extends beyond its launch moment and becomes part of a lasting cultural record.
In this way, Ray is presented not only as a contemporary lighting object, but as a piece with cultural relevance, provenance and enduring design value.

Light from Within
Ray takes inspiration from the inner life of a tree - the growth rings that record each year of its existence. A tree reaching the same diameter as Ray would have lived for around one hundred years. Rather than hiding these traces, Ray brings them forward through light.
The light source is concealed within the circular wooden form, allowing the glow to emerge from the edge rather than being directed downward. Finished with Uzukuri, a Japanese brushing technique that enhances the contrast between the harder and softer growth layers of the wood, the Oregon pine reveals its structure as the light moves across the surface.
The result is a lighting object that reveals the inner anatomy of the wood and allows the material to tell its own story.
