Tsumugi A Pendant

紡ぎ Tsumugi means to weave together, a union of tradition, material and light. Tsumugi A is a softly glowing washi lantern, around 60 cm tall, that holds a gentle presence without demanding a room.
The washi is thin natural paper, handcrafted in Mito and wrapped by hand around fine PET resin strips, so the light stays soft and even. At its base, a flat bamboo disk - worked in the traditional Suruga takesensuji craft and bent by hand rather than shaped with heat - casts a soft shadow downward beneath the lantern: a single quiet note that lets the paper lead. Handmade in Japan.
Each Tsumugi is made by hand in Japan, to order — please allow around 3–4 months for delivery. The wait is the craft.
Choose options
In Tsumugi A, thin washi paper is wrapped around fine PET resin strips, roughly 75 metres of resin-treated internal structure in all, the spacing kept deliberately close. This gives an even, soft glow while suppressing the shadow the strips would otherwise cast.
At the base sits a flat bamboo disk, worked in the traditional Suruga takesensuji technique, its bamboo bent slowly by hand rather than shaped with heat. It does cast a shadow, but one that falls downward, pooling softly beneath the lantern rather than radiating out across the room. Where Tsumugi B's woven base steps forward as the focus, Tsumugi A's disk stays a quieter note beneath the paper, letting the washi lead.
Over time the bamboo develops a sought-after amber hue, deepening gradually with use. Sooner in spaces with strong ventilation or direct sunlight.
At around 60 cm tall, Tsumugi A brings the union of washi and bamboo at a gentler scale - presence without weight, atmosphere rather than brightness.
It suits spaces with volume to fill: a home with high ceilings, an open stairwell, a hospitality interior.
For a more expressive version of the same idea, its companion Tsumugi B sets an intricately woven bamboo base beneath a larger form.

The washi paper shade is crafted by Mito, one of Japan's three largest lantern makers, and treated with a coating for water and stain resistance. The bamboo will develop a traditional amber hue over time. When used in a room with high ventilation or with lots of sunlight the amber color will appear sooner.
As a natural material, each pendant may vary slightly in appearance. Also, colors shown on screen may vary slightly from the actual product.

Tsumugi A is shipped in a solid outer box designed for secure transport. Arrives flat-packed, keeping breakage and transit material to a minimum.
Dust can be removed from the shade using a soft dry cloth.
“紡ぎ Tsumugi” means weaving
Each piece is the meeting of two hands and two traditions - a bamboo craftsman and a lantern maker, each shaped by years of practice in a craft passed down across generations.
The bamboo is read and bent by its own nature rather than forced; the washi is measured by hand and eye, wrapped rib by rib until light and structure become one.
What emerges is not a perfect form but a natural one - the union of two masteries, and of the patience they share.
