Tsumugi B Pendant
Designed by Toshiyuki Tani
Inspired by the traditional collaboration between bamboo craftsmen and washi paper artisans, Tsumugi B builds on Tsumugi A with the addition of an intricately handwoven bamboo base. A pendant that reveals its character through both light and structure.
“紡ぎ TSUMUGI” meaning to weave together, reflects the union of tradition, material, and light.

Tsumugi explores the relationship between structure, material and light. Each pendant is assembled from approximately 75 meters of carefully arranged ribs, denser than in traditional lanterns, giving the shade its distinctive texture and elegant silhouette.
At the base, a handcrafted bamboo structure completes the form. When illuminated, the bamboo casts a subtle rhythm of shadows, adding warmth and visual depth to the interior.
Over time, the bamboo develops a sought-after amber hue, deepening gradually with use, or sooner in spaces with strong ventilation or direct sunlight.
Tsumugi is designed for residential and hospitality interiors where softness, warmth and atmosphere matter.

“紡ぎ Tsumugi” means weaving
From a single stalk of bamboo, a form emerges. Shaped by craftsmanship and the gentle unpredictability of nature. Guided by years of experience, bamboo is refined and paired with thin washi paper, carefully wrapped around finely spaced ribs, creating nearly 75 meters of internal structure within each piece.
The structure is finished with resin-treated washi paper, helping the light diffuse softly while avoiding unwanted shadows.
These lamps are rooted in the Japanese chōchin (提灯) lantern tradition, crafted from split bamboo ribs and handmade washi paper. A craft practiced for centuries in regions such as Gifu, Yame and Kyoto.
