Tsumugi A Pendant
Designed by Toshiyuki Tani
"紡ぎ Tsumugi" means to weave together - a union of tradition, material and light. Tsumugi A is the quieter of the two: a softly glowing washi lantern, around 60 cm tall, that holds a gentle presence without demanding a room.
Its form narrows at the top, fills through the body and draws in toward the base, where a flat bamboo disk - worked in the traditional Takesensuji technique, bent by hand rather than heat - rests as a single quiet note, letting the paper lead.
The washi is wrapped by hand around fine resin strips so the light stays soft and even. For a bolder version of the same idea, its companion Tsumugi B sets an intricately woven bamboo base beneath a larger form. The washi is handcrafted in Mito. Handmade in Japan.

Tsumugi explores the relationship between structure, material and light. Thin washi wrapped over fine resin strips gives a soft, even glow, the ribs arranged more densely than in a traditional lantern for a distinctive texture.
At the base, a flat handcrafted bamboo disk completes the form — when lit, it casts a subtle rhythm of shadow, a quiet note that lets the washi lantern lead.
Over time the bamboo develops a sought-after amber hue, deepening gradually with use, or sooner in spaces with strong ventilation or direct sunlight. Tsumugi A is made for residential and hospitality interiors where softness, warmth and atmosphere matter.
- Natural washi paper shade
- Handcrafted bamboo top and bottom structure
- White textile cord
The washi paper shade is crafted by Mito, one of Japan's three largest lantern makers, and treated with a coating for water and stain resistance. The bamboo will develop a traditional amber hue over time. When used in a room with high ventilation or with lots of sunlight the amber color will appear sooner.
As a natural material, each pendant may vary slightly in appearance. Also, colors shown on screen may vary slightly from the actual product.

“紡ぎ Tsumugi” means weaving
Each piece is the meeting of two hands and two traditions - a bamboo craftsman and a lantern maker, each shaped by years of practice in a craft passed down across generations.
The bamboo is read and bent by its own nature rather than forced; the washi is measured by hand and eye, wrapped rib by rib until light and structure become one.
What emerges is not a perfect form but a natural one - the union of two masteries, and of the patience they share.
